Bow Maintenance and Repairs

At Rehaired Lutherie LLC, we pride ourselves in providing quality repairs on bows and instruments in the violin family. Continue reading to find out the kinds of repairs we would be glad to provide for you. If you don't see the repairs that you are looking for, please reach out to see if we are able to help.

Bow Rehairs

Our most popular repair/maintenance for bows is a rehair. With use, the hairs on the bow will become dirty and stretched out and will not respond as readily. Replacing the hairs solves this problem. Currently, violin, viola, and cello bow rehairs cost $60 per bow and include cleaning and polishing the bow. Bass bows rehairs (both French and German) cost $75 per bow and also include cleaning and polishing the bow. The expected turnaround time for a rehair is between 3 day to a week. Loaners bows are available for use during that time.

Winding and/or Leather Grip Replacement

Over time, the winding and/or grip can start to loosen up or fall off and will need replaced. The most popular winding materials are Sterling Silver Wire, German Silver Wire (silver coated copper wire) and Imitation Whalebone, but Gold Wire and Silk Thread are other options that are available. Weight and balance are the most important factors to consider when choosing a winding material, but price, look, and feel also play a part.

The grip is more than just an aesthetic part of the bow. The grip is there to protect the stick from damage from thumb nails and the oils/acid on your skin. Delaying replacing the grip can result in more serious damage to the stick which results in needing more intensive repairs. The most popular grip materials are leather and lizard skin. We offer both options in your choice of color (either black or brown).

The cost to replace the winding and grip on a bow starts at $45 per bow and depends on the type of winding chosen. The cost to replace the grip only starts at $15 per bow and depends on the grip material desired.
